Underwater Museum of Art

Website Launch

LIFT takes great pleasure in announcing the website launch for the Underwater Museum of Art—North America’s first permanent underwater sculpture garden. The museum is a collaboration between the Cultural Arts Alliance of Walton County (CAA) and the South Walton Artificial Reef Association (SWARA). The museum, located in the Gulf of Mexico, lies at a depth of approximately 60-ft and serves as a gallery to the museum’s inaugural installation of seven sculptures.

LIFT was selected to design and build the museum’s website and to provide professional photography coverage of the artworks, the museum’s fundraising event, and the installation of the artwork. Working closely with CAA’s staff on the project has truly been a pleasure. The museum has garnered considerable national attention with LIFT providing graphics and photography to a range of media including Architectural Digest and the Smithsonian Institution.

Design Approach

LIFT co-founder and the site’s designer Bill Weckel said “It was important to me to use the website’s visual design to communicate two key aspects of UMA: art and movement. Unlike a traditional museum, UMA’s gallery and artwork is alive. It’s moving and evolving. I knew that I didn’t want to rely on photography as the primary design medium. I wanted to incorporate color and create unique digital artwork. I also wanted an element of movement in the site’s design and used JavaScript easing and layered animation throughout the site to achieve this. I’m pleased with how it all came together.”
